Australian Emotional Intelligence experts are challenging the idea that the tremors you experience during stress, anxiety and panic are bad for you in a new workshop designed to help you become more in touch with how you’re truly feeling.
Running in Nedlands on the evening of 3 December 2024, “Unwrapping the Tension at Holiday Time”, a workshop by the Emotional Intelligence Society of Australia (EISA), draws on emerging research from the US that suggests these tremors may be your body’s natural mechanism to release your tension, rather than cause it.
“This is exciting, emerging research that flips the traditional idea that stress tremors are bad for you on its head,” says EISA Deputy Chair, Dr Nigel Gribble.
“Rather than suppressing these tremors, we will be encouraging participants to release them in a series of guided, instructor-led Tension and Trauma Releasing Exercises (TRE®) created by the pioneer of this research, Dr David Berceli.
“It’s perfect to get into before the holidays, when stress levels are often at their highest.”
Leading the instruction is certified TRE instructor, Kate Keisler, the Director of the Perth-based occupational therapy clinic, Calm and Connected, who EISA is thrilled to welcome as keynote speaker.
“TREs is an exciting self-help tool that can be used to release stress and tension in the body and fundamentally help develop Emotional Intelligence,” says Kate.
“If we are overwhelmed, our body goes into shutdown, which limits our movement. Since we rely on movement to receive feedback on what is happening in the body to access our executive functioning skills, we need to move our bodies to understand our needs and emotions.”
Those attending EISA’s final public event of the year will be instructed through exercises intrinsic to TRE over 30 minutes.
They will also receive a 45-minute presentation on polyvagal theory to better understand our tremor responses and how our bodies move in response to stress, as well as meet the EISA board.
“Unwrapping the Tension at Holiday Time”, a workshop by the Emotional Intelligence Society of Australia, will be held at the Hollywood Bowls Club (Highview Park, 42 Smyth Rd, Nedlands WA 6009) from 5:30-8:30pm on Tuesday 3 December 2024. Tickets are $30. Adults of all ages are welcome.
